Located in the tiny hamlet of Greencastle, Indiana, DePauw University is a liberal arts school worth driving out of your way to explore. The campus is beautiful and the students all seem amazingly happy and proud of their school. With just under 3,000 students, the campus facilities are incredible. Highlights include: a state-of-the art media center; a beautiful center for performing arts; and an athletic facility still under construction that will take up an entire city block. A brand new cafeteria is scheduled to break ground this summer and there is evidence of other construction and campus improvements everywhere. Since 99% of all students live on campus, the school has put a lot of money into living quarters and has renovated dorms, apartments and duplexes Unfortunately, the dorm we toured was old and musty and definitely in need of updating. Students love the school’s 4:1:4 program which permits explosion of one subject in depth during the January term either on or off campus. Because of this schedule, a huge number of students (over 80%) study abroad. DePauw has a traditional liberal arts curriculum and students are required to fulfill in a variety of core subjects including foreign language. Popular majors include media and film studies as well as an assortment of more traditional pre-professional programs. There are 5 honors programs at DePaul and each one of them incorporates a significant amount of experiential learning.
DePauw in known to be have a conservative bent and there is strong preppy vibe. This is reinforced by the huge percentage of students involved in Greek life (over 80% for both men and women). The school is rumored to be in search of more diversity and the presence of Posse groups from both New York and Chicago is evidence of the commitment to diversity.
