Skidmore’s Lucy Scribner Library

At the other end of the college campus spectrum, I visited Skidmore College in beautiful Saratoga Springs, New York.   Although I missed the last tour of the day, I procured a campus map at the Admissions Office and went on my own self-guided tour.   Known as an artsy school, Skidmore shows off its artistic side through its gorgeous modern architecture.  The campus itself is spread out in a forest, so it feels more like a camp than a school.

Also, the school cafeteria looks like the cafeteria from a luxurious cruise ship. There are diverse food stations to satisfy anyone’s taste, and the food even looked and smelled delicious. The campus has its own art museum and unbelievable modern housing that resembles town homes, set further back in the woods for upperclassmen.

Since school was not in session, I was unable to talk to any students, although there was a plethora of camps from many different places on campus, making the college seem even more camp-like.  The short walk into cute and historic Saratoga Springs takes one past magnificent Victorian mansions.

Skidmore has a reputation for attracting wealthy, artsy students from the Northeast — which seems accurate, given the lavish surroundings. For the artsy student looking for a small college in a beautiful setting, Skidmore is worth checking out.  The ideal student enjoys winter, as the season is long and cold, giving students many opportunities to take advantage of winter sports and recreational activities.
