Tufts’ Mascot Jumbo

I have a small piece of acquired wisdom I pass on to my children – if they love a school they are visiting even when the weather is awful, they are likely to really love the school. We had that experience at Tufts University today.   It was around 107 degrees in the shade during our visit.  Despite that, my son fell in love with Tufts.  The reasons he cited rang exactly right to me.  Specifically, the proximity to Boston, the size of the school (around 5,000 undergrads and 4,000 grad students) and the laid-back atmosphere of the students fused with an intellectual rigor — are all tremendous selling points of Tufts.   Tufts seems relatively unique in maintaining the atmosphere of a small liberal arts college combined with the opportunities that a larger research university has to offer.  Truly, the size is perfect – neither too large nor too small.

While the campus itself is typical collegiate architecture, the location in both Sommerville and Medford (the Campus straddles the border of the two towns), there is a distinctly urban buzz surrounding the campus.  The “T” stop near campus brings students into the center of Boston in just minutes for recreational as well as internship opportunities.  While known for its particular strength in International Relations, the school offers a well-rounded education in a vast array of subjects.

For the high achieving student wanting to be close to a big city and desiring a first rate education, Tufts is ideal.  It truly is the best of both worlds.
